Fire feeding on fire.

 ~written by Deng Ming-Dao

Today, everyone understands that burning wood produces fire, but when fire feeds on fire, this is the rare condition yielding the greatest illumination. Two flames come together, and produce light more magnificent than either could have done alone.

In the case of communities, this means that when we cooperate with others, the accomplishments are greater than what we could have done on our own. Situations such as this require a greater deal of patience, in order to harmonize with others and together generate ideas. This coalesced inspiration provides the necessary momentum for growth and action. If the combinations are in proper order, then the results will be like fire on fire, and will illuminate the entire world.

At times, this combination may come down to just two people. If these two join forces, neither sacrificing nor asserting their individuality, then their power may be harnessed in unison. This united power will create a wonderful environment for growth, which will benefit others and encourage greater growth for the two participants as well.

Fire feeding on fire may also indicate a swift exhaustion of combustible material. This may result in a loss of potential energies. One must be careful not to lose one's personality entering into such a union. The idea is integration, not complete assimilation. No matter what may be achieved through joining with others, it is the wisest course to plot our own future, independently. The ultimate truth, of the journey and the final reward at the end, is for each of us our own. We must face it...alone.
