Contemplate without thought of gain.
Do not expect ambition to be fulfilled;
inner force manifests from no mind.

~inspired by Deng Ming-Dao

We live in a competitive environment, where ambition, cruelty, and aggressiveness are given additional force by those who are able to shrewdly manipulate the world around them. This is a requirement of survival. In the sanctuary of meditation, however, these attitudes have no use. What works well on the outside will not serve our inner needs.

We must meditate, expecting no gain. If we look for results, they will elude us. In contrast, by suspending our ambitions, results will manifest more quickly. This may sound like absurd mysticism, but it is an undeniable, empirical truth of the spiritual realm. If you have no expectations, you will feel the divine. If you continually strive to satisfy selfish desires, you will only be met with frustration.

The mind should not meditate on gain, as this mode of thinking constructs a barrier which inhibits future spiritual growth. Spirituality is far beyond the intellectual capabilities of the rational mind. Imagination cannot replicate the source. You must tap into aspects of your mind that rarely arise in daily life. Do not be disturbed by this odd approach to spirituality, as the common way of thinking is bound to cause distortions. You can only reach your ultimate goal by suspending the everyday in hopes of touching upon the eternal.
