Delayed Daily Musing - April 27th, 2013 - Immigrant - 移民 - Yímín

Immigrant - 移民 - Yímín

Passage paid for with one's life;
indefinite service in a foreign land.
Sacrifices made for the sake of the family,
the wretchedly poor must give up a son
for a momentary reprieve from mounting debt.
Slave-traders of a different sort
ply their trade beneath the nose
of a people who claim freedom for all
but all too often dropped the ball.
Reunited and suddenly restless,
the States spread westward,
but in the mountains progress slows
under the weight of heavy snow.
A people without a voice or say,
have been sent to clear the earth away,
to pave the trail for the new tomorrow
with their sweat, their toil,
their tears, and sorrow.
With no hope lef
of returning home
these boys, men,
think of the regretful day
when the steamship left
the emerald sea
for the unknown.
